RAZR ’s sucessor

The RAZR ’s popularity bolstered Motorola for the past two years. Motorola has sold nearly 100 million RAZR phones since its launch. But when Motorola launches its RAZR’s sucessor Moto RAZR 2, it is facing toughest times in its history. Sales of company handsets plunged in the spring, leading to its second straight quarterly loss. Its stock is trading at a 52-week low. Also Motorola has just ceded its spot as the world’s second-largest phone maker to korean major Samsung Electronics. In India, one of the world’s fastest-growing, Motorola’s archrival Nokia already commands 70 percent of the market while the Motorola’s share is just 10 percent.

Motorola is betting on two phones the RAZR2 and the Q9 smartphone for its revival. As India catches up with the RAZR 2’s fever here’s the preview on RAZR 2. Let’s find out answer for the following questions in this preview – will the RAZR 2 will replicate its predecessor sucess? will it give the necessary revival for the ailing Motorola?

RAZR 2 models:

The RAZR2 family’s three new handsets – V9 (3G HSDPA), V9m (EVDO CDMA) and V8 (GSM). All look identical with the exception of the V9, which is 1.4mm thicker. The major difference between the three models is their capabilities. The V8 is a basic GSM phone with EDGE and 2GB of onboard storage. The V9 supports HSDPA 3G and has video calling and features like “See What I See”. The V9m is similar to the V9, except that it is EVDO.

Design and Build:

The Razr 2 design is more a refresh of the popular thin handset than a revolution, but it wins new points for beauty. The redesigned hinge and the flattened bottom end are eye-catching, and they contribute to the overall sleek and shiny appearance. The obvious differences between the RAZR2 and the original RAZR are the massive external display and the lack of an antenna bulge gives exclusivity for the newer V8. RAZR 2’s glossy steel casing not only looks good but gives the handset a high-quality feel. At the core of RAZR2 is a stainless steel internal frame to provide strength and durability. The huge exterior lens is made with chemically hardened glass to be more scratch resistant.Motorola has tested the cast aluminum hinge in more than 100,000 lab tests to help ensure that every time a customer flips open the device, it will work perfectly.

The display is about 56mm (2.2″) across its diagonal measurement and runs at QVGA (240×320 pixel) resolution. RAZR 2 has twice the resolution of the original RAZR but it’s maximum video resolution is restricted to 176-by-144. RAZR 2 features a very usable 2″ TFT external screen. Moto RAZR 2 has become leaner by 2mm than its predecessor but RAZR 2 has become 6mm longer than the V3. like the RAZR’s the keys on the keypad are flat with the same raised rubber numbers but benefitted from the increased length. The navigation array features the same round four-way toggle with the central OK button. Moto RAZR 2 V8 weigh 117g and its size is just 58cc.

Moto RAZR 2 uses the same BX40 battery which talktime is upto 500minutes. RAZR 2 V8’s standbytime is 280hours

extensive view on RAZR 2’s exciting features:

* On the front section of the V8 there’s a large colour screen that’s will easily be one of the best external screens in a clamshell phone available in india. Not only can you view text messages when the V8 is shut, you can also control the V8’s music player via touch-sensitive on-screen keys at the bottom of the screen, which vibrate when you tap them. The vibrating touchscreen music keys produce something called haptic feedback,i.e. you feel like you’ve pressed a real button, when all you’ve actually done is tap a flat screen. You can also send pre-programmed messages with the phone closed but only on V8.

* RAZR2 automatically adjusts audio to ensure clear calls even in a noisy environment. Cell-phone companies rarely talk about voice quality,Motorola is the exception. Motorola RAZR 2 features Crystaltalk – Motorola’s new voice technology which pulls voices out through existing background noise.

* Motorola has incorporated Google’s powerful new mobile search experience for its RAZR 2 also with the new completely redesigned User Interface (UI) for RAZR 2 will make your search the contacts easier and faster in the new RAZR 2. This new UI eliminates duplicate entries for the same person while allowing contacts to have multiple numbers. The main menu is customizable, so you are never more than 2-3 clicks away from favorite applications also RAZR2 automatically recognizes what type of message you are sending. The RAZR2 V8’s software is almost exactly the same as that found on the MOTOROKR Z6

* RAZR2 V8 “talks” to consumers by speaking the interactive menu, contact lists, emails and messages aloud — a feature developed for people with visual impairments, but convenient for in-car use or when you are on the go.

* Motorola RAZR 2 has another innovative feature called “See What I See” – A new real-time point-to-point video feature allows another wireless customer to “See What I See” while a voice call is in progress.

* Already RAZR 2 has earn some credits before its worldwide release, Moto RAZR 2 marks the Motorola’s entry to the next generation mobile architechture moto RAZR 2 V8 supports Linux. RAZR 2 gets a new ARM 11 processor1, processing speed is 10 times faster than the original RAZR and with high-speed USB 2.0 it only takes 2-3 seconds to transfer a song. The RAZR2 reported spectacularly high scores on the JBenchmark Java benchmark tests which estimates the phone’s processor speed, to run.

* RAZR 2’s Microsoft Windows Media Player 11 compatibility will help it owners to easily purchase, synchronize and transfer their music library to their RAZR2 in only a few minutes. RAZR2 features stereo Bluetooth wireless technology7 (Bluetooth Stereo Headset allows users to make hands-free phone calls, wirelessly listen to music from a Bluetooth enabled audio device, and wirelessly control the Bluetooth audio device).

RAZR 2’s bad bits:

*The V8 doesn’t have expandable memory but it comes with 512MB of shared memory plus in addition to the 2GB of internal storage. The V9 and V9m have a microSD card slot but it’s crammed behind the battery cover.

*Sadly RAZR 2 features only flashless, 2-megapixel camera which are not so contemporary

*no standard jacks on it. Even the larger mini-USB connector we’ve grown used to, replaced by a new mobile specific micro-USB port. I’m sure RAZR 2 is a yet another phone for you have to get new chargers and new headsets. Existing users have to forget about their Moto RAZR UI before going for the brand new RAZR 2 since things are completely different in the new system

* RAZR 2 V8 has no 3G hence Browsing in your RAZR 2 will be only through the built-in Opera browser which uses the relatively slow EDGE network. But because of the fast processor atleast it will try to sync with your speed.

Colour and the Price:

If you wish a eye catcher then the RAZR 2 is for you. If you are searching for a professional phone then moto RAZR 2 is not your pitstop. The RAZR2 isn’t intended to be an smartphone or an iPhone —rather, it’s supposed to be the midrange, voice- and music-centric phone for everyone. Moto RAZR 2 will be available in maroon and dark blue costume. South Korea was the first to receive the Moto RAZR 2. The RAZR2 V9m was released in South Korea on June 29, 2007 at a price of $630. Moto RAZR V8 is priced $499. As Motorola aggressively cut prices of its prodcuts in emerging markets like india, to boost its market share, RAZR 2 will be priced competetively.

not just for entry users:

“Whether the consumer is a first-time buyer who has little experience with mobile phones, or a more well-versed customer looking for a new mobile phone for personal or business use, each will find what they need in one of these new products,” said Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Mobile Phones, Nokia. In may 2007  Nokia showcased seven new entry level handsets – the Nokia 1200 and Nokia 1208 (both aimed at new subscribers), Nokia 1650, Nokia 2660, Nokia 2505 (for CDMA markets), Nokia 2630 and 2760. Of these models 1650 is the more practical and contmporary and it is due to be launched in the third quarter 2007.

“Creating a mobile phone that combines an intuitive user interface and easy-to-use functions with an attractive design is at the heart of Nokia’s entry market strategy.” The smart mobiles and Hi tech mobiles which usually cost over 10grand may be the winners in beauty contests no more the entry level phones are spectators nowadays they too embraces sleek design and featuring contemporary metallic accents.

Design and usability:

The 1650 looks like a candy bar and it is compact and sturdy with measures of 17.8mm in depth, 104.2mm in height & 43.8mm width. Nokia’s 1650 comes with a 65,536 colours colour screen which is a CSTN(color super-twist nematics) type screen which has a screen resolution of 128 x 160 pixels which is ideal for displaying colourful wallpapers & themes. The Nokia 1650 comes with an easy to use interface & a good size keypad complete with shortcut keys. The one touch shortcut key allows the user to gain quick access to features including the messaging service, contact details, calendar, loud speaker & flashlight feature.

1650’s features:

Nokia’s 1650 supports around 75 local languages which is very imminent for entry level phones since most entry level buyers prefer their mother tongue over english. In Nokia 1650 you can store upto 250 sms and it also supports picture messaging and offers a distribution list for msging. Also the Nokia 1650 answers the need for cost control that too is very important in entry markets by having an application that allows for a pre-set time limit to be set for each call. Nokia offers a power saver mode in 1650 which allows you to conserve power to gain more talk time.

Nokia’s 1650 features a flashlight(simply torch), music-on-the-go via FM radio and supports MP3-grade and 32-chord polyphonic MIDI ringing tones. The GSM compatible 1650 has an impressive 8MB of internal memory 6MB more than Nokia’s another entry level model 2626 but 1650 lacks GPRS what 2626 has. Nokia’s much advertised facilities – speaking clock and alarm features in 1650 too. Using the 1650’s handsfree speaker option you can make short voice recording which can be stored on the handset and can be used as a reminder foe later use.The 1650 comes with preloaded games which include snake xenzia, beach rally & soccer league game. The Nokia 1650 is also equipped with common features like a calculator, stopwatch, calendars and countdown timer.

Battery and the price:

Nokia’s 1650 uses BL-5C battery one of the longest on any phone – Nokia bets a staggering 8 hours talktime with up to 17 days(420hrs) standby time. The Nokia 1650 will be available in metallic red and metallic black colours. The estimated price for the 1650 would be approximately Rs3085 excluding taxes and subsidies. Totally another exciting phone from Nokia for practical users.
